Layers and groups

The whole scene as one list. Select, rename, hide, group and reorder anything, and decide which objects an effect applies to.

Press the Layers button on the right edge of the editor. Layers opens as a panel against the right edge, and the canvas makes room for it.

One stack

Layers lists the whole scene, top to bottom:

  • Post FX that are on, pinned at the top. They work on the finished picture.
  • Objects and shader effects, mixed together in one list.
  • The environment, pinned at the bottom: the HDRI, the background, the studio light and any lights you added.

A cloner shows the objects it repeats under it, and a group shows what is in it. Use the arrow on the row to fold them away.

Shaders apply to what is below them

A shader effect in the list applies only to the objects below it. Drag an object above a shader and that effect leaves it alone. This is how you keep a logo crisp while the scene behind it turns to ASCII, or pixelate one object and nothing else.

Working with rows

Do thisTo
Click a rowSelect it
Point at a rowHighlight it in the scene
Double click a nameRename it
Drag a row between othersReorder it. The other rows make room as you drag.
Drag a row onto an objectAttach it, so it moves with that object
Drag a row onto a clonerAdd it to what the cloner repeats. See Cloners.
Ctrl click, or Shift clickPick several, or a run
Right clickGroup, Ungroup, Detach, Rename or Delete

Each object row has three buttons:

  • Hide removes it from the scene and from what visitors see.
  • Solo shows only that object, so you can work on it alone.
  • X-ray makes everything else see through, to find a part inside or behind others.

Solo and X-ray change only your own view while you work. They never save into the scene, a render or a publish.

Rows for effects and lights switch them on and off, and clicking one opens its panel.

Groups and attaching

Select several rows, right click and choose Group to put them in a group you can move as one. Ungroup takes them out again.

Attaching works like parenting: drag a row onto an object and it follows that object when it moves, while you can still move it on its own. Detach sets it free. The positions you see are kept when you attach or detach, so nothing jumps.

Everything in Layers can be undone, and the order is saved and shared with everyone in the project.
