Working in the scene

Selecting, moving, snapping, copying, undoing, and getting around the canvas.

Getting around

Do thisTo
DragOrbit around the scene
Right dragPan
ScrollZoom in and out

After you let go of an orbit, the view coasts for a moment. Set how long under Preferences, Editing, Orbit glide: lower stops where you stop. This only changes how the editor feels to you. Published scenes are not affected.

Press G to show or hide the grid. The grid, the gizmo and the light outlines are guides: they never appear in renders, publishes or thumbnails.

Selecting

Click an object to select it, and press Esc or click empty space to let go. A selected object shows an outline, and a few quick buttons appear at the top right corner of it.

You can also select anything from Layers, which is the easiest way to reach something small, hidden or behind something else. Hold Ctrl or Shift there to pick several.

Move, rotate and scale

The tools are in the bottom bar and on the keyboard:

ToolKey
SelectVClick things with no gizmo in the way
MoveTDrag an arrow to move along one axis, or the centre to move freely
RotateRDrag a ring
ScaleSDrag a handle to stretch one way, or the centre to scale evenly

Press W to switch the gizmo between local space, which turns with the object, and world space, which stays square to the scene.

Snapping

Hold Shift while moving or rotating to snap to steps. Set the steps under Preferences, Editing, Snap increments: move, rotate in degrees, and scale.

Scale works by gears instead: hold Shift to scale faster and Alt to scale finely. Scaling never flips an object inside out or shrinks it to nothing.

Exact numbers

Every slider in Facet can be typed into. Double click the value and type. A typed number can go past the slider's range when you need it to.

Ctrl R puts the selected object back at the centre, with no rotation and its original size.

Copy, paste, duplicate

Key
Ctrl DDuplicate. The copy lands exactly on the original, ready to move.
Ctrl C, then Ctrl VCopy and paste
DeleteDelete

If your clipboard holds SVG code instead, Ctrl V turns it into a 3D object. See SVG and vectors.

Edit mode

Double click a selected object to go inside it. In Edit mode you can pick out and move the separate parts of an imported model or a vector, without taking it apart. Press Esc or Back to come out.

To give one part its own material, drag a material from the Library onto that part. See Materials.

Undo and redo

Every change can be undone: a moved object, a material tweak, a light, an effect, a whole cloner. Dragging a slider is one step, not one per pixel.

  • Ctrl Z to undo
  • Ctrl Shift Z or Ctrl Y to redo

If you change something on a breakpoint and undo it later from another one, the editor jumps back to the breakpoint where you made the change. Changes made by a connected AI can be undone the same way.

Saving

Facet saves as you work, a moment after each change. Adding or removing an object saves at once. Ctrl S saves immediately if you want to be sure, and the status line says Saved.

Projects on a paid plan also keep a history of snapshots you can go back to.

Wireframe and helpers

  • Ctrl F shows every object as a wireframe, and again to go back.
  • View, Light helper in the menu draws the outline of the studio light.
  • The Lights panel can draw the outlines of every light. See Lights.
