SVG and vectors

Turn a logo, an icon or any vector artwork into a real 3D object with depth and bevelled edges.

Facet extrudes vector artwork into 3D: every closed shape in the drawing gets depth, and you choose how deep and how rounded the edges are.

Three ways in

  • Paste. Copy SVG code, or copy a vector straight out of Figma or Illustrator as SVG, and press Ctrl V anywhere in the editor.
  • Drop. Drag a .svg file onto the editor.
  • The SVG panel. Press SVG in the top bar. Paste the code into the box, drop a file onto it, or press Import file, then press Extrude.

The new object appears in the middle of the scene, ready to move and give a material.

Depth and edges

Select the vector to see its settings:

SettingWhat it changes
ExtrudeHow deep the shape is
BevelHow far the edges are rounded off
Bevel EdgeHow many steps the rounded edge is made of. More is smoother.
SubdivisionHow finely curves are followed
SmoothnessThe angle under which edges are shaded smooth instead of sharp

For the quickest way, hold Q with the vector selected. A dial opens at your cursor with Extrude, Bevel, Bevel Edge and Subdivision: drag a wedge to change it, and let go of Q to close it.

Thin strokes and big bevels

A bevel wider than a stroke has nowhere to go and starts to eat the shape. Keep the bevel small on fine lettering or line icons, or thicken the strokes in your design tool first.

Parts of a drawing

Each colour or fill in the original artwork stays a separate part. A three colour logo is three parts, even if it is made of a hundred little shapes.

  • Drag a material from the Library onto one part to give it its own look, and the rest of the object keeps its material. See Materials.
  • Double click the selected object to enter Edit mode and move parts on their own.

Good SVG for Facet

  • Closed shapes extrude. Open lines with no fill have nothing to fill, so outline strokes to shapes before you export.
  • Flatten or remove clipping masks and hidden layers you do not want.
  • Text should be converted to outlines. To work with live type, use the Text tool instead.
